Marc_H : Broken fibula
Diary entry posted Thu 8:41am 16 June 2011

16 June 2011 Thursday

Broke my fibula Monday when a...ahem,... larger friend decided to get a piggy back ride. I have given them to him before with no trouble. I grabbed beneath his legs and as a person receiving a piggy back is to hold on for the balance's sake all was well. Then his shirt came up and, not with just one, but both arms my friend reached back to pull his shirt down. The imbalance it caused brought us both backwards. My right foot got caught under him and as I tried to fall/stand up/something I heard a nasty pop as half of my leg went with him and the other half with me. About four inches north of the "ankle bump" my fibula gave out and broke. Sat there in considerable shock/discomfort but not an awful amount of pain. Got to the hospital and they did three x-rays and told me it was a hairline fracture, gave me a Darth Boot and sent me home.

Tuesday was a fairly painless day. I had to go buy crutches as the ones we had at home that I told the ER about (as you know the ER would charge a ridiculous amount) were for midgets. Then went to the orthopedist who showed me the x-ray. Wasn't a hairline like the ER doc said, I tell ya that much. The blasted thing is snapped clear through. Kind fellow left me with just doing a wrap and using the Darth Boot in public, crutches and boot for 5 weeks. :-(

Yesterday I was using a chair as one of those "knee scooter" things in the kitchen and, by my own fault, imbalanced the chair and fell and my body reacted quicker than I could think and I caught myself on the afflicted leg. Boy howdy if that didn't hurt. It's been popping a lot more but I think it's alright in all. But that's about my story. Lots of bone popping around since it happened but the doc says it'll be done in a week. So we'll see what happens. I'm a college student who lives on one side of the campus and all of my classes are on the other side so I think I'll try and find a cheap wheel chair or something. It's not very painful as much as it's somewhat sore but more than anything a huge inconvenience. I can't even figure out how to do something simple like a bowl of cereal. And as for showers I did a chair in the shower but the shower here is only as big as the chair. This sucks but at the same time I'm sure it's a great blessing from the Lord with a fantastic lesson to learn...but it would have been nice if He just told me the lesson or something.
