Lea : Broken fibula on my anniversary
Diary entry posted Mon 9:46am 28 November 2005

I can't believe I've broken my ankle. My fibula. I fell down the stairs, only the bottom two but managed to twist my ankle and brake it. Unfortunately it was on November 16 my 26th wedding anniversary. I heard the pop so I new immediately it wasn't sprained. Has anyone seen the commercial where the woman falls and she can't get up. Thats how I felt. Here I was on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. Home alone with the dog. And I couldn't get off the floor. I had to crawl, actually drag myself thru the dining room , down another step to the family room where A cordless phone was low enough to reach. Oh, did I mention it was 7:30 AM. I called my daughter, she a junior in college. I woke her, she wasn't happy. Then called my boss, I guess she needed to know I was on floor with a broken ankle and was unable to work. I then ruined my husband's day. I ended up having to call 911 because I couldn't walk, couldn't get off the floor. How embarssing, a fire truck, 2 police cars and an ambulance for a broken ankle. I'm sure I was the highlight of the neighborhood being wheeled out my front door in my poka dot PJ's. The up side, no wait in the ER when you arrive my ambulance. I ended up being in the ER about 5 hours. Found out I broke my fibula, very near the joint. Had tons of xrays. Went home in a beautiful black boot. They gave me a choice between the boot or a splint with the ace wrap etc. I thought the boot would make showering easier.....nothing makes that easy. It's an experience. Went home with instructions to follow up with OS in a week. Spent the week, including Thanksgiving sitting on the sofa being waited on. I'm not use to that. Does all this inactivity mean extra pounds? Hope not, need to figure out some way to exercise.
Also spent tons of time trying to figure out how bad my break was, hence I ending up finding this web site. Love it, its great very informative.
Went to the OS November 23. He was not happy with the boot. He would have preferred a splint. Hey, I was offered a choice, and I took the easier of the two choices. I found out I do not need surgery. Yea!!!! Very happy about that. I have a stable SER, Weber B fracture of the right ankle. That means I can't drive. Bummer...how am I going to go shopping. OS will check the stability of ankle again at next visit to be sure. Went home in a hot pink half cast, PWB. Next appointment in 2 weeks, December 7 for a cast change. Will they do xrays to see if healing has started? I should be in a cast 5 weeks, 1 was in the boot. What happends after the cast? Do I go back into the boot?
Finally bought my husband an anniversary card 1 1/2 weeks late. Had to get a ride. I should save tons of $$$ can't drive = no shopping.
