Because the break happened on the 2nd day of our 10 day vacation, I stayed put. We got a hotel on the beach in Puerto Vallarta and I learned to walk on my crutches to and from the beach, where I sat under an umbrella and ate fruit, drank Piņa Coladas.
When it came time to return to Seattle, the plane ride was hell. I had only a cotton gauze wrap on my leg, as the skin would need to be cleaned and monitored. Children in the airport came dangerously close to my leg, and it freaked me out. As an airplane takes off, it and everyone aboard is under G force...with a broken leg already throbbing, that was awful. It was nothing compared to the original pain, but really unpleasant nonetheless.
Once home, I took two days off of work to catch up on my sleep and get accustomed to my "new" surroundings. Since then, I've been back at work with no limitations (I am a Customer Care agent, so I sit and talk on the phone all day. Perfect for healing a leg, which I elevated on my desk for two weeks).
2 weeks post-accident/surgery, I had the staples removed from my leg. It was the first time I had seen the incisions and I cried so hard when I saw them. There were 44 staples to take out and it looked so awful! Since then, though, I've come to terms with it and the skin is healing wonderfully. I'm massaging Mederma into the scar 3 times daily, and it is really healing quick.
