well I think since fiberglass casts are lighter and more breathable than plaster, it would be more comfortable so maybe that helps speed up your healing by making you less distressed?
Otherwise I interpret "appropriate immobilization" to mean casts which you don't adjust or remove yourself (fiberglass or plaster) versus removable splints or other things you can adjust yourself, like an inflatable air cast. I guess the doctors dont' put you in things that you can remove or adjust yourself, until you're past the critical stage, or even not until then if they tend to not want to give the patient any chance of accidentally damaging their BL's!
