I have the same issue.
I switched to a very small flexible ice pack and that seems to help but i still feel the 'weird cold almost achy feeling' in my hw when i ice.
6/27/12 spiral fx fibula, dislocated ankle
6/29/12 ORIF....back slab...NWB
7/18/12 staples removed (yikes!), bare leg, NWB, PT
8/15/12 PWB
8/29/12 FWBAT continue PT
