You are on the right track then David. That's as good as the news could be at this point! They check non surgical fractures every 2 weeks just to make sure that the alignment of the bones is still good. It means that the bones haven't shifted and that the repair at the fracture site should be becoming more stable. I think at my week 6 I went from the full leg to the PTB cast. It is a lower leg cast with a part that extends in front of the knee, moulded to the knee cap to help prevent rotation of the lower leg. I was supposed to remain in the PTB for two weeks and then go to a regular, lower leg cast to begin weight bearing. When I went to have the PTB cast removed, I had enough soft callus formation, that my doctor put me straight into the boot instead of the lower leg cast.
When you get out of that long leg cast, your knee is going to be stiff and probably a bit inflamed/swollen ~ especially as you begin to get it moving.
You will have this again, when you are out of a cast completely. . . this time with your ankle.
I think most people are caught off guard at the swelling and pain in the knee and ankle when they have a tibial shaft fracture, not a broken knee and ankle!
Other than a couple of commercial cast cooling products, like Cast Blast (?) the only other think that helped me keep my leg cool was ice packs. Not on my cast but I would put one at my groin area or even behind my neck and on my forehead. It was like a distraction or something. . .but it worked.
Hang in there David! You are doing GREAT!!
