Yes, absolutely. I was never in a boot which was interesting because I had four weeks between when the cast came off and I could get a shoe on, and all I could wear was a slipper I'd cut holes in to allow my cankle + bandage to fit into.
I am still very stiff - my plantarflexion is fine (close to 100%) but my dorsiflexion is very stubbornly coming back. I did not think it had improved at all, but yesterday at physio they said it had. They got me to stand with my toes of my bad foot against a wall and bend my knee towards the wall (kind of like a lunge). A week ago I was 16cm from the wall, which is the entire length of my foot. Yesterday I got to 9cm. So still a long way off normal ROM, but coming back.
Manipulation by the physio has eased the tightness in the front of the ankle - I now feel it slightly higher than I did, and also in the back of my ankle. Walking helps, but I have to really concentrate on my gait otherwise I don't do the "rock forward" motion (because it hurts). I think the hydro is very helpful too, and I do loads of stretches. They've now got me doing positional stretching - putting a rolled up towel under my toes (while seated) to keep my ankle as dorsiflexed as I can, for about 10minutes at a time. I am finding this uncomfortable but helpful.
