Weight-bearing is a gradual process, because there's a lot of soft tissue that has to recover to allow you to walk again. I recommend using the crutches and PWB while you get used to the idea of walking, especially if you have been NWB for the full 7 weeks. Also, get advice from a physio to make sure you are doing the right things.
I was told I could WBAT nearly a month ago. I am only just able to walk without crutches this week, and even that is only for short distances. It took me about two weeks to be putting a substantial amount of weight on, though now the progress is faster. I was a big chicken at first and seeing a physio was very helpful in building my confidence.
My injury is different, but I find the general idea that "because the cast is off everything is ok" that orthopedic surgeons tend to spread to be quite misleading. Just because the bone is healed doesn't mean that things will be easy or pain-free. So it's normal to be a bit nervous and take things slowly.
