Hi Lisa,
I didn't have surgery, but the problem of not being able to stand or walk on the flat of the foot is very normal during phases of recovery. When you stand on the flat of the foot, you stress the muscles and tendons of the lower leg (already impacted with injury) , especially the muscles along the front of the leg...I suspect walking on the side of the foot is therefore, at least partly, a defensive response to injury...Good news is it does clear up in time, with physio.
