Dang it! More surgery than I thought.

Well, I posted here a bit ago that I was going to have surgery to correct an already healed BL with HW due to a car accident.

Today I visited with my ortho and he told me a bit more than I was ready for. I knew that my plate and screws had to come out of the tib and fib and that there was a torn ligament across the top of the foot (bend of the ankle). I also have a big hernia over my fib plate. BUT, I had no idea that my heel bone is out of place. It will have to be moved and I will have a screw put in it to hold it in place. I also have to have my achilles tendon fixed as that is part of the problem. How you have a heel and achilles fixed?

It seems to me that I am having my whole ankle redesigned. I trust this doc so far. He said I should be 100% able to do as I want once I heal. However, the recovery process is a bit lengthy splint with an iceing unit for two weeks, then the cast, then a boot, (16 weeks), then P.T.

I have to work or I don't eat and I stand on my feet to work. I am worried about such a long recovery. I am a bit down about it all. I think my surgery will be on June 4th (still thinking of how to prepare for all this).

I know a lot about ankle recovery, due to MBL.com, but I never dreamed by heel was an issue. I thought I would just be dealing with taking the HW out and repairing a ligament.

So, it looks like I will have two new incisions (seems like the tib incision was done wrong from the start so it will be different this time). But the heel? Anyone out there know about an out-of-place heel and it affecting the achilles? Or are they seperate things. My mind was so full of information at my doc's office that I didn't think to ask the right things because I didn't expect all of this.

Bi-Mal fx 2007-Never healed. New OS/Surgery 8/6/2012-Cancaneal Osteotomy 2 screws heel, HDL tendon transfer, Achilles Lengthening, Spring Ligament repair-HWR Tib/Fib-Large splint w/cooling pads. 8/14-8/24 2012 had 3 casts-8/28 air boot. 9-18-12: PWB.
