I suffered the same accident slipping on the ice in Alaska on 23 March, 2002. I had surgery the following morning where a titanium rod, plate, & screws were inserted in my leg. I was on 2 crutches for 8-weeks, went to one crutch for 2-weeks, & now I am using just a temporary walking cast. I plan on ridding myself of that in about 1-week. I have been in physical therapy for 2-weeks & my foot is also turned outward. With more therapy, my foot is beginning to return to normal. The fact that my foot was imobilized for so long, combined with my joints stiffening, caused my foot to turn in this fashion. In only 2-weeks of physical therapy, I have noticed an improvement in the position of my foot.
