Comment : Spiral Tib/Fib Fracture (With Surgery)
Posted by G. Kasson on Wed 1:01pm 9 March 2005

Well, I'm glad this is not an exclusive club. I sustained a classic Tib/Fib spiral fracture January 8, 2005. I was riding my 20" folding bicycle in my neighborhood, and for some unexplained reason, the handlebar shaft folded down on me. I fell forward and to the left. Unfortunately, my foot got caught between the frame of the bike as I fell, resulting in the spiral fracture, complete with the loud snapping noise! I needed surgery due to the severity of the injury. I ended up with an 8" plate along the Tib and a 4" plate along the Fib with 12 screws holding it all together. When I saw the x-rays after 6 weeks it looked like the inside of an Erector Set!
I go for my 8 week checkup March 10 and hopefully their is enough bone union to permit me to start therapy. The pain is practically gone but the swelling persists. My surgeon said the swelling will be there for "quite some time".
I to am very active...tennis 3x's a week, weight training, bicycling (ha!), etc., so being this immobile is killing me. Only upside to all this is that I lost 15 lbs. from dragging my butt on the crutches. My surgeon said the alignment of the ankle and leg is excellent, and the prognosis for a full recovery is excellent as well. Calcium supplements are very important, as well as a complete high protein diet, and of course, no smoking. My Dr. said that smokers do not heal anywhere near a non-smoker. Y'all take care and get well quick!
