Annie_L : Driving Again
Diary entry posted Wed 3:45pm 23 March 2011

After 15 weeks I am now mobile again. Last weekend I cleared my old car out before it was traded in and I thought I'd start it up just one last time. We have memories, we've been together for 5 years. So, starting up was good, putting the clutch in was not. It felt like I was pushing the pedal in forever, I was shocked at how weak my leg is still. I managed to do it 3 times and then gave up. First thought was that the clutch was really stiff and I had never noticed. Back into house and actually had to rest my knee and take pain killers it was so uncomfortable. Turns out clutch is fine, just me. This made me feel better about giving up a manual and driving an automatic. I had wondered if I was being abit hasty and should give it a few more weeks. Now realise that I am weeks (at least) from driving a manual and an auto was the only way that I would get my independence back. Only short journeys so far but every one is easier. Haven't quite worked out the best driving position yet so still some aches and pains in left leg but I'll get there. The scary thought is that if I had broken my right leg I would not have been able to think about driving again for months. Glad to have joined the mobile majority again. Funny how this is such a big topic on this website.
