Yesterday was my third PT session following my HW removal, and I have to say, I am more and more pleased as time moves forward with my progress. My ROM is within a few degrees of my un-broken ankle, and I anticipate I will shortly be back to where I was pre-surgery. I can feel a freedom in my foot during certain types of movement that I did not feel with the HW in. That thrills me. I continue to do my PT exercises and invent ones that I know stretch my foot. I am still not doing any one-legged stands or any lateral weight-bearing exercises until my x-rays in several weeks show my holes are filled in. I did end up with a slight infection at the very top of my incision where the plate came out, but, after having it checked out at the OS's office have just been watching it and it is slowly going away. Other than that, there has been nothing negative about this surgery. I am more optimistic than ever about what this spring and summer will bring as I really start working my foot. The air-cast is still a pain (pun intended) when it rubs against my healing tissue, but I am adjusting to it. Each night I break open a Vitamin E capsule and gently rub it over the incision sites. Hopefully it will help prevent scarring, and desensitize the areas as well. All in all, I'm glad I had the HW out. All the best to those of you on the broken leg adventure!
