Hi Annette,

I'm now 9 weeks past my 5 bone tri-mal ankle fracture/dislocation, surgery, plates and the whole nine yards. The first six weeks were the worst. I am now walking pretty well without crutches and just using the "boot". It seems the more I walk the better I feel. The first six weeks seemed endless. I've noticed that I've felt better since I've been back to work (I teach art). Seems it keeps my mind off of my foot! Also downright necessity! I've got to keep catastrophes from happening. My first day at school was the first day I was allowed to put "some" weight on my bad ankle. I tried going on one crutch that same day. By the second week I used one crutch consistently and this week I even took a crutchless "pleasure walk" with my dog - imagine that! I climbed fields and small irregular terrain. It took a while but was worth it! It's amazing how doctors differ on casts. My OS in Delaware (where I was injured) told me a hard cast for six weeks. When I came home to PA, my new OS put me in a walking boot to allow me to do exercises, shower and sleep. (That was less than 2 weeks post-op). The exercise definitely helps! I have not been assigned to a PT yet. The OS in Delaware had a PT to see me the very next day?
Hang in there. All I can say is I now have very little swelling and feel pretty good. (Not quite ready to run a marathon, but 100% better than July 17th).
Anita
