Ann : 9 weeks post-op
Diary entry posted Fri 4:37pm 2 July 2004

Finally got to see the os for my 9 wk post-op visit - and I learned a lot - and it's always better to know. I'd been chaffing to get in to see the dr. especially because this appt was delayed a week. I've been feeling good, no pain good rom and working to build muscle isometrically - anyway figured that since so many get to start pwb about this time I would get to as well. They took x-rays as usual and hung them up in the exam room - even I could tell that the edges were getting fuzzy BONE GROWTH!!! Yeeeehawwww..... The Dr's asst came in and talked as though I must have been pwb for some weeks, so I'm figuring for sure I'll get to start using the leg. Nope. The dr comes in confirms the growth, even seemed a bit surprised by it, checked my rom - then asked what I wanted - to start PWB duh? So he asked why - I mean really - I've been on crutches and/or wheelchair for 10 weeks - why would I not want to start learning how to walk again. I refrained from giving a cheeky answer and mentioned that crutches and carrying files at work wasn't a good mix. Anyway, he doesn't really want me using it. Phrased it something like - well if you're really careful, and move really slowly, and watch where I'm stepping, then maybe. Obviously would like me to wait. His waiting explaination was that even though there is bone growth, my leg only has 60% of its original strength and because of the type of fracture it's at high risk for rebreaking. That's when I heard the term plafond fracture. Plafond is french for ceiling. A google search found pilon/plafond - pilon for high impact as in auto accident, plafond because it's the top of the foot. The web prognosis is depressing - with most ending up with long term problems. My os is talking like I'll get it all back, and I hope that's for real. He sent me to see the pt - got some bands for resistance training, and I go back in 4 weeks.
