Angie_L : A week in the hospital
Diary entry posted Tue 3:17pm 27 January 2015

After the wonderful paramedics managed to get me up the stairs and into the ambulance, I was off to the emergency room, where my sister-in-law met me to lend some support. My husband, unfortunately, works out west in Alberta on a 14 days on, 7 days off schedule. He was in the Edmonton airport waiting for his flight home when I fell.

So the OS came and took an xray, determined I was indeed broken, and called for an anesthetist so the bones could be set and splinted. I don't remember a thing about that part, but my sister-in-law told me a few weeks later that I screamed in agony each time he set one of the 4 breaks. It's so weird to think of that and not be able to remember it at all (though I'm thankful I don't!).

Once the bones were set, I finally got my first blessed dose of morphine via my IV, and was sent to the xray dept for a more extensive "before" series of pictures prior to surgery. By the time I was done, they had a room available for me. The orthopedics wing was full, so I got to move in on the gyno/maternity floor. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise, since Mother Nature chose the next day to laugh in my face and start my period. I've had 3 children, and knowing my nurses dealt with such feminine issues every day made the whole thing less embarrassing than it would have been otherwise.
