I can answer the physical activity question to some degree.
I didn't get a rod in my tibia (you'll see it referred to here as an IM nail/rod), however I was very active before my BL and intend to be after.
Like you, I think that being active and in good shape when I broke my leg helped my recovery significantly. I'm 21 weeks out now and have been doing PT/walking and doing PT for about eight weeks now. At first, dealing with the muscle loss and the mobility loss is rough, but you get past it. I've started riding my bike again, outdoors just this week, and it's been fantastic. In fact, riding outdoors has made the biggest improvement.
Keep a good attitude and be strong, you'll get to do as much as you can in the future.
