Andy_R : Cast off 1/8/08
Diary entry posted Wed 8:18am 23 January 2008

Well, the day to have the cast off has come and gone! I can't say how glad I was to be rid of that. I only had it for a total of 3 weeks and 1 day so I got lucky in that regard. They cut it off without any issue, x-rayed the fibula and the OS said he was very pleased with how it all looked. He said he couldn't even tell where the break was. I was fitted for a large walking boot that inflates on both sides to keep the ankle snug. He told me he wants me to be walking with the boot and no crutches within a week and a half and out of the boot completely in a month. He also said to start PT right away. This OS is at a sports medicine surgery center and has an agressive rehab philosophy (Cast for 3 weeks only and then start PT).

I was told to take care of the incision site so that it wouldn't become infected, it's all healed up now and the scabs are all gone. They did a pretty nice job of stitching it because the scar is very thin.

The skin on my leg wasn't too bad, a lot of peeling but nothing too gross. I did lose more leg muscle than I was expecting.

The biggest shock was at how stiff my foot and ankle was once I got the cast off. I could barely move it 1/2 inch in any direction. That's going to improve with PT hopefully!!
