Hi everybody! My name is Andrew. I am 15 years old from Vermont. I broke my leg at school playing basketball. Here is my story:
It was friday afternoon, last class of the day before a mid winter break, and it was gym. Today we were doing dodgeball and basketball, pick your own. I picked to play basketball with my friends. My friend jumped up for a layup, and when he came down, he landed right on my ankle. CRACK, POP, CRACK! Thats what I heard, and it was enough to put me down in serious pain. I wasn't crying, I was just holding it wincing in pain. People in my class were upset, some girls even screamed. I did not know it but there was a puddle of blood underneath my leg. Gym teachers rushed to my aid doing what they could until the ambulance got there 7 minutes later. When they got there they stabilized my leg and applied a turnakit on my knee. In the ambulance, the gave me an iv and cut up my pants. The white shoes and socks I was wearing were now red after they took them off. They had me posistioned on the stretcher leaning up and I was able to see everything they did. We arrived at the hospital 20 minutes later and they said they could not do anything else until one of my parents arrived. My mom got there first and the doctors told her that I had a trimalleolar fracture which would require surgery immediately. Trimalleolar just means your usual tib/fib fracture and fracture of the talus and ligament damage. During surgery they put in a plate with 4 screws on the back of my tibia, and a plate with 3 screws on the bottom of my fibula. However what happened in surgery will scar me for life: I woke up at the very beginning, but was paralyzed. I felt everything they did to me. I couldn't do anything about it. I felt his scalpel cut my leg open, but I couldn't do anything. That was agony. I told them about it and said some people are like that but it is impossible to determnine inside the OR. I was able to leave the hospital 4 days later after I was able to get up on my own. Now I have this 25 pound cast up my whole leg. It is incredibly uncomfortable, but I have to have it on for 4 months! The doctors said the break was so serious that it may not heal a year from now!! I'm just incredibly upset but I have to get through it! Hope to speak with everyone very soon!
