Andrew_C : Gator crash, tibial plateau fracture, recovery so far
Diary entry posted Mon 1:48pm 30 April 2007

4/8/07, Easter Sunday, I was riding a Gator (one of those golf cart on steroids things) around the farm where I live. I saw too late that I was heading straight for a tree and didn't think I'd be able to turn out of the way in time, so I slammed on the brake. I missed. Instead of the brake, my foot hit the gas. I went forward, my legs both breaking through the dashboard and hitting a metal bar behind it that John Deere just had to put at knee height and not put seat belts on the thing, it's like they're trying to injure people's knees. My left leg got almost nothing, just a small bruise and a gash about the size of a quarter about 6 inches below the knee, but on the right leg I got a tibial plateau fracture. It was pretty mild compared to most I've read on here, it was a wedge fracture that needed 2 screws. The first week post-injury was horrible, I was immobilized and in pain almost constantly, even after taking Advil and the prescription painkiller, and I was constantly depressed about how long recovery would take (I'm pretty sure they gave me 6 weeks until starting FWB, don't remember), but after I got the immobilizer off the depression was gone in a few days, and I was at my normal personality again. It's been 3 weeks, and I have about 70% of my knee's range of motion back, and as far as I can tell the fracture itself is mostly healed (it hurts more to overbend my knee than if I accidentally trip and instinctively land on my right leg for balance). I hopefully start driving again in a week, I've tested my ability to work the pedals with the car off just to see if I'd be able to, I could do that no problem and I can do any pedal-related stuff I need to on guitar and piano, so now the only thing stopping me is doctor's orders. I'm seeing my OS next Monday and I plan to seek his permission to get back on the road, so wish me luck in that area.
