Hello all, my name is Andrew and I live in New York. I'm 13 years old. The story of my broken leg will begin shortly, but first I am going to give you an overview of my day up to that point.
6/21/2011-- It is the last beautiful day of the week in New York before we get rain for 2-3 days. It was also the first full day of my summer vacation. I obviously slept in until like 11. Then I ate breakfast and went next door to my friends house because both of my parents work during the day and I was beginning to get bored already. So my friend is 15 and has a cool trampoline. Before we get on we both take off our shoes and socks, well he did anyway, I was already barefoot. I could talk about feet all day long but I won't. By the way, I DO NOT HAVE A FOOT FETISH!! haha. Back to the story... we began jumping and doing backflips and stuff like that. Then I was starting to get real big air and so I decided to give myself one last HUGE jump. That was a mistake. I was in a cannonball kind of posistion, then I looked down and saw nothing but grass, I said an explicit word. I landed extremely hard on my knee and my knee and leg quickly jerked to the side and then I heard two loud cracks. It took me 2 seconds to register what had happened and was screaming in pain. My friends mother came out with the phone in her ear already calling 911. It took 15 minutes for the firetruck and ambulances to arrive. My thigh was swelling up and the bone was starting to pierce the skin. I then saw blood and just about passed out. When i woke up i was already being stretchered off to the ambulance. I looked at my leg and they had it splinted. Two of the EMT's were saying keep the sirens on, he needs to get to the hospital ASAP. I looked at my leg again to find my femur bone sticking out. I cried a little more. On the way over every bump and pothole seemed to make my leg feel worse and worse. It took 15 minutes to get to the hospital and they took i dont know i guess x-rays and mri's. My doctor walked in, and by that time my mother had arrived, and the doctr said that I had both an open and communited fracture of the femoral shaft. There was also a lot of blood being lost and I needed surgery very shortly. He explained that first, he needed to try and realign the bone and then clean out the area where the blood was lost, then insert a large titanium rod into my femur and place 3 nails in the middle and 4 screws on the outside. He did all of this, but then I needed a blodd transfusion because too much blood was lost. My mom gave me 3 pints and that was enough to keep me going. The surgery took 6 hours and I was in the recovery room for another 2 or 3 hours. I woke up during the second hour and couldn't really talk or feel much. My femur was still bleeding slightly but stopped after an hour. My leg was on a pillow in a lot of pain. They told me that on my other foot, appartently I had a broken toe which i had not felt or saw. The surgeon said that I was lucky that I did not lose my leg because if I had done any more further damage to my artery, they would have had to amputate it. Can you believe all of this happened over a silly trampoline accident?!?! Well I was in the hospital for 2 days and when I got home I stayed in a recliner for a week. Today is the first day where I am hobbling around outside. Boy does it feel great. If anyone would care to ask questions or talk about feet haha you can email me at email@example.com Thanks for reading and I will post further updates as the long and winding days progress!
