Andrew : Walking progress, 8th day
Diary entry posted Fri 1:21am 9 April 2004

8 days post FWB. I had my PT appointments yesterday, 2 of them. One PT is the guy my health plan covers. The other is a guy recomended to me by a coach on my rugby team.

First PT appointment was with the health plan guy. He took some measurements of my ROM and gave me some excercises to do. I have a rubber tube that I pull foot against in all 4 directions, 2 sets of 20 reps for each direction. Also he has me do a calf stretch, one with a strait knee and one with bent knee, 30 seconds each. He also told me to try and balance on my bad leg, which I think is the best excercise for my foot, I can really feel all the little muscles in my foot waking up. He also told me to ride a stationary bike a lot, at difficult settings to start building the muscles in my legs without having to move my ankle too much. He said to try doing the eliptical walker thing as long as it wasn't causing much pain. I havn't tried it for more than 30 seconds yet though, I think I might give that a try tomorrow as my ankle is feeling pretty good (relatively speaking). After that he just said to come back in 2 1/2 weeks, there wasn't anything he could do until I could walk normal without any pain.

Later in the day I went to the other guy, who I think is also a chiropracter. In any case, he grabed my foot and moved it around until I heard a pretty loud crack in my ankle and I could almost immediately feel my ankle get looser. He told me to try walking around a bit and it definately felt a little better, wasn't a huge differnce, but it was something. After that he put some electric stimulators on my calf muscle for 15 minutes. My calf muscle on my injured leg is still smaller than my good side, but its definately been bulking up the past week. It's starting to feel reasonably solid again. This physio said he is going to work on getting my ROM back first so I can walk better, and then we will start doing weights once I can walk normal. I have another appointment with him tomorrow.

Most of the day today my ankle/foot was still quite sore and I was walking with a limp. Tonight it was actually feeling better though. Walking around my aparment just now I was able to walk without a limp. There was still pain, but its the first time since my injury that I have been able to walk pretty much normally. I wonder if I am actually getting better though, or am I just getting more used to the pain? Well, I am going to go try and do some more balancing, I really think that excercise helps a lot!
