Amy_H : Day 22
Diary entry posted Sat 8:46am 30 June 2007

This is my first post, I broke my lower left fibula exactly three weeks ago this evening so this is technically "Day 22". I was walking through a friend's yard at dusk in my new sandals. These were great sandals, about 3" off the ground so they gave me some extra heighth (and confidence). I don't know what happened, but next thing I know there was intense pain and I passed out. I think I either stepped in a hole or maybe my ankle just turned and I fell on the leg. I could hear the bone snap. My husband, a few feet in front of me, turned around in horror and told me lay down, he would call an ambulance. I really didn't know what happened (I thought maybe the ankle had just been twisted) until I sat up, looked at my foot, then laid back down and passed out. The wait in the ER was horrible - 6 1/2 hours until I got a room. They put me on a morphine drip. I had surgery the next evening, a Sunday night. They put a plate in with some screws. One of the screws slipped out and I had more surgery on Day 19 to extend the plate and re-screw it on to the bone. So far I'm coping alright, I have been able to work some from home and I hope to be back at the office next week. I'm fortunate that most of my work is done at a desk on the computer, so not a lot of physical activity is demanded of me. I do plan to travel via airplane in about a week, I keep pushing to resume my normal activities so I don't get bored. I feel good, all things considered - very minimal pain and about as much energy as before the break. But I have to remind myself not to do too much - one instance of me losing my balance could mean another trip in to the surgeon's office!!
