January 20, 2007 started out like any other day...fresh coffee, walk with the dogs, and off to work I go. It was lightly snowing and part of my job duties include emptying cash acceptors at our carwashes throughout the city. I stopped at the first one and just got it all locked back up when I slipped and fell on the ice. I heard the POP and knew that I had broken my ankle. My foot was on the lower side of the curb and my knee on the top. I looked over my shoulder and saw my Nike shoe facing the wrong direction! There wasn't anyone around and I had left my cell phone in the car. I crawled over to my car, pulled myself up and called 911. Thankfully a stranger had pulled up and finished talking to 911 and I had her call my hubby. At the ER, I was told that I had a tib/fib dislocated fractures that would require surgery. I have never in my life experienced such pain as I did when they 'relocated' my broken ankle. There just really isn't enough morphine on board to go through that. I knew that I was in trouble when they shut the glass doors to the room as not to scare the other patients. That was on Saturday and I went home from there with a semi-cast on. I was scheduled for surgery that Monday.

Surgery apparently went good. I learned that I had torn a ligament in 2, and had multi-fractures of my fibula. Two incisions, one plate, 9 screws, one long screw through both bones, and 33 staples later, I was on my way home. Percocet was my friend...morphine was my BEST friend!

Nights are extremely long and uncomfortable.

Amy
