Amy : STAIRS!
Diary entry posted Sat 10:43pm 6 July 2002

This is extremely weird. I've been working on my 'dorsoflexion' in therapy, and can do almost anything now that I was doing before the break, with the solitary exception of walking normally down stairs. I practice on curbs, telephone books, on the cellar stairs where there is a rail on either side, but still I can't quite manage to do it under any non-practice circumstance. I have to side step down, holding a rail.

But an hour ago I floated down a half a flight before I caught myself in amazement. My husband saw it too. I got to the bottom of the flight and just stood there, agog. Of course, now I can't seem to repeat it, but it definitely happened!

Relearning to walk normally has been one of the great excitements of my life. Nearly every child in this world learns to do it, and I think they must feel the same sense of wonder and joy. To coordinate all those muscles and bones, balance and thrust forward, always just on the edge of toppling. It really is a wondrous thing, walking.
