Amanda3 : It all started on when...
Diary entry posted Wed 9:55pm 10 December 2008

It all started when I went to go try a "kid safe" horse out for my daughters on September 20th, 2008. Got the horse all saddled up. Had a bad feeling, but didn't listen to my gut feeling. I told my mom that I was probably going to end up on the ground. Got on the horse and the horse took 4 steps and started bucking. I went forward, backward, forward, on to his neck and then on the ground. When I hit the ground I noticed my ankle was dangling inward. Looked to see the horses hooves in the air next to my head and I rolled over, stood up and tried to "walk" out of the pasture that is when I heard "CRACK" and saw the fibula come out the side of my right leg just above the ankle. My mom and stap daughter came and got me out of the pasture and put me on the man that owned the horse golfcart. My mom starts calling my dad and I am telling her ever so politely to get off the phone and call 911 because I knew I was in trouble. The horse owner calls 911. I then have my mom take my shoe off because I did not want the paramedics to cut my shoe off. After the accident happened it took the fire truck about 10 minutes to get there and another 10 minutes for the ambulance to arrive. The firefighters got my leg cleaned off and splinted. Boy did that hurt. Finally made it to Lakeland Regional Hospital. That is when the screaming and cussing began. Xrays were taken and the OS was called. Sometime later that night the OS got there and off to surgery I went. The OS put an external fixator on and to recovery I went. My mother fired him as soon as the surgery was over because the OS came out of the oerating room looked at my husband and asked him why he was not in jail. EXCUSE ME? He then said Your wife is 25 with a 7 year old. My husband kept his cool and told the OS that I was of age when I got pregnant and that we are a happy family and this has nothing to do with my broken leg. My mom interupts and tell the OS you are no longer treating my daughter and has two options either leave through the door or he was going out the window. OS then tell my mom that the best thing she can do is get me out of "his" hospital and take me somewhere else. Well at this time it is like 2:30 am. Now where in the world are they going to take me at that time. New OS came in next day. Explained that there was too much swelling to do surgery to repair the tib/fib and shattered ankle. New OS explained that I did alot of damage and shattered the whole ankle joint. So time to sit in the hospital and wait for the swelling to go down. on the 12th day swelling was down enough to do surgery. OS inserted a rod, plate, wire and about 18 screws in the ankle, tib and fib. Back to the ortho floor for 4 more days until being released. That was a total of 16 days in the hospital. It sure felt like a year though. Had first OS visit on October 20th to get cast off, stitches and staples removed. Then given the dreaded black boot and told non weight bearing for at least 12 weeks. After coming back home called my OS from 20 years ago and scheduled an appointment to see him. He agreed to take my case and off to get Xrays. Didn't like what he saw and said it looks like it is going to be a non union. Told to come back in 3 more weeks for another set of Xrays. December 2nd more xrays were taken. Those were compared to the xrays from the hospital and the ones from the first visit with him 3 weeks prior. Nothing changed at all. No bone growth nothing. OS said time for a bone stimulator. Next appointment is on the 17th of December to have more Xrays and get the bone stimulator. I am praying that it works. If not then OS said as soon as he can mark it a non union, we will be back in the OR to "fix" it. He is not impressed with what the OS at the hospital did. The good news in all of it is OS said that he will take all hardware out once the bone has been completely healed for 2 years.

If I have learned one thing from all of this, it is I am not climbing on anyone elses horse except for my own.
