Alyson_P : Cycling Gone Wrong
Diary entry posted Wed 11:58am 26 September 2012

On 8/30 while camping on vacation my hubby & I decided to go for a bike ride. We rode our bikes to a beautiful breakfast spot overlooking a marina. Had a good time. Headed back to campground and we were almost back to our campsite when I hit a soft patch of sand. My bike slid and I fell but my foot remained clipped in to my pedal...crack I heard! Ugh. Went to the ER and they tell me it's broke and I need to see ortho guy to get casted...they wrap it temporarily. I was thinking..ok, I can handle just getting casted. I get appt. next day for ortho dr. We go in and dr. takes one look at x-rays and says...whoa, you need a surgeon...I'm sending you to our other office. We go to other office and this guy confirms surgery is definitely needed with screws and plates and the whole nine yards. I have 3 fractures in 2 bones...the tibia and fibula. One problem...this dr. can operate but the hospital is more than an hour from our home...we asked for someplace closer...we got referred to another dr. in the City and whalah....one week after the accident I was having the operation on 9/6.

Immediately after surgery I felt good. I came home with a nerve block attached to my leg. Managing the pain was a piece of cake. 2 days later that pump came out and wham down came the pain. I never felt anything so terrible in my life. I wanted the pump back in!!! After several days of lots of pain meds...I finally was able to slow up and start decreasing pain meds. OK when you need them...you need them bad and there's no mistaking that. But...when you are decreasing your intake...ugh, I felt like crap. Upset stomach, headache, insomnia and feeling hot all the time. That lasted for a little more than a week.

I am now almost 4 weeks since the operation and I have the cast off and the boot on. I use ice constantly. And everyday I feel a different pain. The other day I had a pain in the side of my ankle that was driving me crazy...now thats gone and the pain today is in my shin. This has certainly been an experience.

I might go crazy from being housebound for so long and not being able to do much. Normal activities (like getting dressed & showered) just take so unusually long...it's crazy. Doing my best to cope and deal with this but any tips for how to do things better with crutches would be greatly appreciated. I am using a backpack, wear clothes with pockets and yes, it's still a struggle. I am to stay off the foot until I return in mid-October. Until then........I'm watching tv, reading or on the computer.
