Alyson : I broke my leg 7th week of Army BCT
Diary entry posted Mon 9:50pm 27 December 2004

Well, I joined the Army band last April, and left for BCT June 18th. I was a good soldier; I always did everything to standard, my drill sergeant liked me and i had a lot of battle buddies. On the first day of the seventh week of BCT, we were doing morning PT, muscular endurance, and i was up for the pull up bars. It was really slippery from the dew and as I was mounting the bar for my last repitition, I slipped and fell wrong on my left leg. I blacked out and about thirty seconds later, sat up. Everything was quiet, though I could see people screaming around me. I looked down at my leg and seen that it was bet at about a 90 degree angle in the middle of my shin. I then proceeded to sream my head off! Drill Sergeant Rhodan proped me up against him and tried to calm me down while the other drill sergeants called for an ambulance and got me ice. I was then put poorly in a stretcher and given morphine for my shock. I arrived at the Moncreif Army Hospital and was told I would need sergury. I remember them popping it back into place while stuffing a thermometer down my throat and taking my vitals... worst. pain. ever. I was then handed a phone to call my parents to give the 411. Since i was pretty doped up by then, it sounded like a small child was speaking, but because of the HIPAA laws, I was the one who had to tell.
I woke up after the sergury by myself in a small, white room. I had no clue what the hell was going on, and all i wanted to do was cry. I remember having to pee really bad, and none of the nurses would come help me, so i stole a shallow bucket and went on my own. I was by myself for the most part. My parents live almost 800 miles away from base, and other than my Drill sergeants who came, I was by myself with a TV that did'nt work and a morphine button. I did'nt even know what kind of sergury I had, because nobody would show me my x-rays and my doctor went on leave right after my sergury.
I was stuck in the hospital for four days, until my drill sergeant came and took me to a medical holdover facility. It was approx. twenty minutes away from the Hospital, where we ate, and a long walk. Even the walk to the bus station was long, and then we had to wait sometimes hours standing up for it. It was bad, REAL bad. When I applied for conn leave, almost three weeks after the inciddent, was when I finally found out what was done to my leg (it was also the first time they changed my dressings). I had a titainium rod from my knee to my ankle and three screws. yay, joy. I got my conn leave and came home for 28 days, came back and was sent to a place called PTRP, Physical Therapy and Rhabilitation Program. Horrible place. It was ran by drill sergeants who didn't care for us and were just trying to get us back into BCT. I mean, I was cleared to run almost three months after a major fracture... not cool. I ended up reinjuring myself, and was kept from my family and friends for another four months.

part II will come shortly, I so sleepy
