Allen : ya take the good, ya take the bad, ya take em both and there you have a walking cast
Diary entry posted Sat 11:57am 16 June 2001

I went to my os yesterday. I was hoping for some type of thing that was not a cast when I left. Well, I had x-rays and my old cast taken off. The doc said everything looked excellent, but I was put into a walking cast. This is the same as my old cast, but now I have the gigantic blue velcro shoe sole to put on the cast to walk. Before the new cast and when there was no one in the room, I was scratching my leg like mad. I felt bad about leaving so much skin and hair that was falling off my leg, but it felt soooooo good. So another cast is not so good. But on the other hand, it's a walking cast and I don't have to use my crutches too much anymore! I went into work yesterday after my appt. and showed everyone how I could carry a non crutch item in each hand and walk at the same time. It is awesome. Whenever I walk, it always takes a few steps to get into it, but after that, it is pretty nice walking (albeit frankenstein-like)

So here a synopsis of what has been, is, and will be on my leg.:

splint
cast
surgery

splint
splint
cast
cast
brace until I don't need it

whew! At least I can't say I am bored with looking down and seeing the same thing on my leg. I assume a lot of you have also dealt with similar changes, upgrades, downgrades, etc.

So, I didn't get the leg brace I wanted (bad), but I have been released from the clutches of my crutches. (very, very good) Everything looks good, so I am going to take this appointment as a small victory. By the way, my docs are great, and I would recommend them to anyone in the Maryland DC metro area. They seem to take a conservative approach to treatment, but we all know that things cannot be rushed with a broken leg. For example, even though I would be happier in a brace now, it makes sense to be put back in a cast. I was just in a non-weight bearing cast. Now I am in a weight bearing cast so my leg can get used to walking movements with weight. Then, when I go to a brace, my ankle can get used to flexing without having to get used to weight being put on it. So optimism is slowly returning and I am happy that I should be able to go on my planned summer trips being pretty mobile. I'll report back after my next appointment.
