Alicia : 2/17 The Accident
Diary entry posted Fri 1:33pm 27 April 2007

It began driving home from a belated Valentine's Day party. I live on an old twisty country back road, which means you have no room for error. No shouldner to the road, just embankments or drop offs. We had just had ice, but it had melted off the road for the most part. I was coming around one of the sharper turns when a car came towards me, partially in my lane. I swerved to avoid him and my tires caught the ice on the side of the road. The car flew down the embankment and into a cedar tree that was not very forgiving.

After everything stopped, with my car tilted on it's side in the ditch, I struggled to sit upright and get out of the car. I grabbed the steering wheel to pull myself up, and it came off into my lap. I managed to get the drivers door open, and braced it with my good leg, cut my seatbelt off, and went to swing my other leg out of the car. I realized then that I couldn't move it. I was already quite shaken. I searched for my phone to call an ambulance, couldn't find it, but found the headset in the passenger seat (which I can use to redial the last number called on my phone). I call my husband in a panic. He called the rescue people and they came to my rescue within the next 5-10 minutes. After bracing the car for safety (there was still ice around, and they wanted to make sure it didn't move while trying to get me out)they managed to pull me out of the car and get me into the ambulance. Away we went to the hospital.
