Good luck with your non union..heres my story..not to scare you but to tell you what the risks are; I was a tib/fib frx; multiple fractures...went with the IM nail situation...which resulted in non union. After 6 months, another surgery and more hardware. Three more months (we're at nine now)a bone graft was attempted...6 months into that, still non union...a third surgery to attach an external fixator resulted in a serious infection and avascular necrosis at the sites of the internal and external hardwar, about 18 months after teh initial injury. The infection developed I was treated in hospital with IV antibiotics for three weeks which were unable to control an extremely painful infection. I was discharged and hobbled around with the infection for a few more months, and elected to have the leg amputated below the knee about two years from the inital injury date.
Because of the infection and the wound site, I've not been fitted with a prosthesis...its been a long time now..three years into it..i'm nearly healed and looking forward to better mobility without my crutches using a prosthesis.
