Aggie : Saved my 17year old dog broke my ankle
Diary entry posted Sun 10:07am 6 April 2003

Sunday February 16th 2003, We were in the midst of a 23in snow storm, it was 7:00 pm, I had just taken my other dog in from the outside to do what comes naturally, and changed my boots for a pair of slip on type shoes. I headed down the cellar steps with my 17 year old dog in my arms and slipped, I couldn`t catch myself as that would mean dropping her . I threw my weight backwards catching my heel betwwen the step riser and the landing.I heard a crunch which I now know was my heel dislocating, and shortly after my fibula snapped. I was sitting in an area on my landing of about a 4'by 4' area. My dog was fine laying behind my back. I knew my ankle was broken, but I had no pain! I sat for what seemed to be minutes and tried to move it. When I saw bone moving under my sock and my foot did not follow my leg I knew I needed help. My husband was upstairs just finishing a shower, I dont know if it was the realization of how badly I had broken it or an adrenolin thing , but I let out what he discribed as a blood cruddling scream! He came running downstairs and stood at the landing naked. Calmly I told him to call 911. First I said you need to put your clothes on. At this point we had a state of emergency, only offical vehicles were allowed on the roads. Thankfully the ambulance was right around the cornor the hard part was getting me into the ambulance. The emt were slipping all over trying to get their footing to pick up the stretcher! The emt kept saying he never had a patient with this type of break with no pain. Even when the imobolized my ankel there was no pain. He said you must have a high pain tolerance, I said I had a 10lb baby natuarlly, that answered his question. The the hospital I was told I had a bimalleolar fracture, and would need surgery. Of course because of the weather I would be casted and hope to be operated on in the am if the surgeon could make it in.
