12 May 2010.Nineth day paragliding in the himalayas. Took off from 'Billing' caught a thermal or two then hit sink, made bad decission not to head for landing field as there was what looked like alternative landing zone below. 'Turned out to be more complicated than it looked with power lines to avoid and more trees than expected. Crossing the cables and dodging the trees led to me crashing into a rock wall at speed. After radioing for help and being carried across the paddy fields on varrious local farmer backs (painfull) to the road a taxi took me an hour and a half drive on Indian back roads (more painfull) to hospital. X-Rays showed a crack down the top half of R. Tiabia and a top, outside corner piece broken off top of same bone. Surgeon says two choices. Fly back to U.K. for opperation or he could opperate in the morning. I did'nt fancy being in a U.K. hospital any more than in an Indian one and my wife and two kids were trecking in next valley, out of phone contact so I got it done next morning. Epidural, surgeon, 4 helpers, two screens showing ongoing x ray footage of drill going thro and then big titanium screw going in. No english spoken, all a little daunting. Next day fiberglass cast in blue and pink. Three more days in hospital, Rice dahl, veg, chapati for every meal (loved it!)still no english spoken. Finaly My wife got thro on the phone for me to tell her where I was, big releaf. Out of hospital back to backpackers in 'Bir' with four days to prepare for a 12 hr journey to 'Delhi' to meet with family and fly to Bangkok, where there were violent riots tareing the city apart. First night out of hospital leg swelled up so much top and bottom of cast turning full yellow and purple horror show. Thought I'd not be able to travel but Thai Aways said no problem to fly with cast and the swelling went down just in time to start out on my jouney, all pretty stressfull tho. Traveling with broken leg right pain in the ass! Thailand not heard of disabled access. Anyway got various X ray check ups done as advised, each in a new place as we moved about (each orthopeadic Dr says something different!). Got good on the old crutches and a friend bought me out a water proof stocking, a must in hot countries so did some swimming and even a little snokeling. Then on the 30 June 7 weeks after the crash I got my cast removed which ment taking a boat to 'Koh Samui' as my son and I are staying on 'Koh Phangan' for the moment while My wife and and Daughter explore 'Loas'. I hired a quad on the way back from the boat (a bit tricky to ride) So now we are more mobile. Now, one week later I'm a bit worried about my leg. I can't straighten it, bend it or put any weight on it and it looks to me like it bends out form the knee in a way it should'nt. This place is perfect for re-couping, swimming in the sea ever day and walking (with crutches) in the soft sand but there's no physio and I don't know if that could cause problems in the future. The pain side of physio I can handel but my experiments at pushing the bends only resulted in swelleing and siezing the knee, obviously not helpfull. Is there advise I can get on appropriate exersizes with out leaving here?
