Comment : Can you find a PT?

Adri -
I have a tibial plateau fracture - 8 screws and a plate from soccer in early Feb. I started PT two weeks out of the hospital. My PT has me doing all sorts of exercises - some with the therabands for the ankle and others with my husband helping me move my knee. Can you find a Physical Therapist? I think it would really help. You need to rebuild your quad muscles and your calf so that you can support your leg. I totally understand the falling off leg syndrome. When I first took off the brace (no cast) and had my leg naked on the table, I was afraid to let the back of the knee drop and touch the table. I kept thinking it was going to fall apart. I sat there sobbing as my PT just said it wouldn't fall apart, that it was totally screwed together and it would be okay. After my initial freak-out I am now getting used to leaving my leg out and relaxing it so it'll hit the table. Today I got some electrical stimulation to show me where my muscles are in my quad so I could work on moving them and building them back up.
Hang in there and with someone supporting your foot and knee, start bending it. Tell them to let you set the pace. You are going to need 90 degrees or more in your knee to walk and 100 degrees in your ankle so you don't limp.
Get a towel if you don't have a theraband and put it around the bottom of your foot and pull until you feel some good tension. Keep doing it three times a day. Hang in there.
