Your postings were very inspiring to read. I had been a chubby guy for the past 3 years, and decided to try biking. I went and bought a nice bike, all the equipment. My first ride was 2 miles and I wanted to call someone to come and get me. Within months I was riding 20 - 30 miles a day, 5 days a week. In Sept 2004 I was doing a quick 20 minute ride before work. The sun was in my eyes, so I was watching my rearview mirror for cars behind me - since I was on a very narrow road. From out of no where a van slammed into the back of me and I went off the road, flipped twice and landed sitting up. I looked down and my leg was a Z shape! I was airlifted to the hospital and the break was much worse than I thought. I had an infection within days, and spent 4 weeks in the hospital, and had 9 surgeries. I was sent home with a wound vac - a suction pump that was hooked to a hose, and ultimately to a sponge that was placed in the gaping hole in my leg. The vac was on for 2 months, and took the hole down in my leg to a manageable size. Back to the hospital for a skin graft. After 5 months, I went back to work , and bought a new bike. Depsite the fact that I walk with a limp right now, I feel great. I am up to 15 miles again and hope to keep at it. Thanks for your story.
