dec 8 '99, just like any other morning, i was getting ready for work, have to leave by a quarter till 7 to be at the plant on time, at 6:30 i get a call"hey aaron, change of plans...we need you to go to iowa falls, the crew has been working for 20 hours, and we need you there"....nothing too unusual for me(im a millwright)so i ask what will i be doing?"well they should be just about done by the time you get there, youre just gonna go pick up the job truck" easy money was the first thing to roll through my mind, although there was blizzard like conditions forcasted. so i get there around 9am, its about a 2 hour drive, and see that there is still plenty of work to do, one of the main things is installing a 1 ton dampner. i quickly took charge of this part of the job, and decided that i would need 2 people besides myself to do this. i would quide it into position while a coworker ran the forklift. at approximately 9:45am my coworker, whom i found out later had been on the job 19 hours by then, pulled the wrong lever on the fork truck and consequently the dampner came off the forks and somehow found a way to come right for me! thankfully i was quick enough to dive and get my body out of the way but not fast enough to get my leg out. after a self rescue, the ambulance was there in 10 minutes and i was in the local hospital in 20. they werent equipped to deal with my injuries so i got to take an hour ambulance ride to another hospital, and by this time it was total white out conditions, which is why i didnt get a helicopter ride:(,there i found out that i had a 3a open tib/fib fracture, there was 4 ends of my bones sticking out, the tib had created a 10 inch tear on the inside of my leg and an 8 inch tear on the outside of my leg, the fib was basically shattered and had managed to puncture through at 2 different spots. some nerves were stretched and some were simply missing along with some of my calf muscle. surgery that day, a rod with 5 screws and a wound vac, on the 10th i was stapled and stitched up and on the 12th released from the hospital....still NWB after 8 weeks, and projected NWB for at least another 5-10 weeks(part of my tib was missing also)so much for easy money!!!!
